Moving Mountains: Prospecting in the Gorkhali Polity

Our upcoming research initiative explores the layered histories of mining across the Gorkhali polity from the 18th to 20th centuries. From copper tunnels in Gulmi to sulphur paths in Jharlang, this project traces how knowledge, labor, and materials moved across regions. Through archival study, oral histories, mapping, and public engagement, we seek to surface new ways of thinking about extraction and the architecture of production in the Himalayan region.
